Protect Yourself & Others from Ultraviolet Rays

Most of us have heard about the importance of sunscreen to protect against skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It would seem that being indoors is protection against these harmful UV rays.

But a lot more UV radiation is entering through those windows than one may think.

Ultraviolet Radiation & Health

The Skin Cancer Foundation says exposure to the sun’s UV radiation is a substantial, year-round risk factor for skin cancer.

The two main types of ultraviolet rays that aren’t blocked by the earth’s atmosphere are UVA (associated with skin aging) and UVB (associated with skin burning).

While the damage done to the skin is different, both types “damage(s) the DNA in skin cells…that can lead to skin cancer (and premature aging).” About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and as much as 86% of melanoma skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes other health issues that can arise from exposure to UV rays, including eye damage and weakening of the immune system.

Winter or Summer: Glass Alone Doesn’t Stop UV Rays

How much ultraviolet radiation is coming in through your windows & glass? Studies show that UVB radiation is blocked by plain glass but about 74% of UVA rays are not.

And it doesn’t matter what the season. The SCF explains that UVA rays don’t become stronger in the summer & weaker in the winter: they “penetrate through clouds, fog & glass” all year long. They’re invisible and have nothing to do with heat or temperature so you don’t often know when you’re being exposed to UV rays.
